Last Import-37

We were invited to a little boy’s first birthday, so I decided to haul out the pattern for the jumper I had put away because Toby has three tops made with the pattern, and make one the same size because it fits Toby perfectly at 18 months old and figured that it should last a 1 year old for a while. It is sized 80 cm, and Toby is almost that tall now. I made the top with the cotton French Terry with 5% Lycra that I love but had trouble sewing last time. I have done some research on sewing stretchy fabrics and found that using my walking foot may give a better result. I put my faith into my walking foot and forged ahead. I used an animal print cotton interlock for the inside and made a giraffe appliqué to match the giraffe on the fabric. It was my first attempt at making up an appliqué, and I am pretty pleased with how it turned out. I was also happy with the hood since it did not stretch out of shape when I sewed the binding on this time. The walking foot seems to have helped a lot. I was very happy with the finished top, as was Toby who didn’t understand why he couldn’t wear it after I tried it on him to make sure that the neck opening was not too tight (as several of the earlier ones I made are a bit on the tight side going over the kids heads).

And I also made this apron for his 4 year old brother who’s birthday was one day earlier. The dinosaur appliqué came from Helping Little Hands and Little Lizard King.

I have one more gift to make for a friend who’s first son was born about a month ago
but, as I have never made the pattern and it has a neckline I have never done before, I am just procrastinating a little with it. Photos will be posted when it is done.

Knitting Trials

27 Jun

We rode our bikes to the shops, checked the PO box for mail and there was a much anticipated parcel from Oma. Toby held onto it all the way home while sitting in his bike seat since the parcel didn’t fit in Nathan’s backpack. We weren’t even in the door before the parcel was ripped into and Nathan pulled out his new jumper….except, just like the beanie I had knitted him, I knew from one look it would be too small. Nathan tried it on anyway, just to make sure. Lesson learned: fitting measurements are difficult to sort out over the phone.

The verdict was that Toby scored himself a new jumper.

Nathan now has a beanie that fits him, and Oma has started on a Nathan sized jumper.

Everyone was happy. Well, probably except Oma who now has to knit a second jumper when she had anticipated just one. 🙂

18 months old

Toby is now 18 months old. My baby isn’t much of a baby any more! He is turning into a very independent little boy. He is quite happy to explore both new and familiar places on his own, and he knows what he wants with enough words to make his wishes understood most of the time. He stands up to Nathan now when Nathan wants to take what Toby has, and certainly makes his wants known with a combination of words, pointing and crying (when we don’t understand or he doesn’t get his way).

Toby has many more words at 18 months old than I imagined he would a few months ago. I did a word list for Nathan when he was 18 months old, and I decided to do the same for Toby. The words are those he uses spontaneously and not those he tries to copy when someone else is talking. The problem is that every day he comes out with more words, and I never remember them all. I would say that Toby’s list isn’t as comprehensive as Nathan’s was. Toby is also putting words together into two and three word sentences.

Colours and number recognition are also coming along. When we count from one to ten, Toby says the first two numbers, and if we stop at the number nine then he will finish with an excited “TEN”!

Elimination communication is going really well now. Although Toby has been doing poos on the potty for quite a while now, catching his wee in the potty has been more difficult. The last few weeks has seen what seems to be a huge breakthrough in that he is more often dry than wet now. He is able to sit on the potty by himself if he has a bare bottom, and will occasionally on his own initiative for wees and more often if we suggest that he sit on the potty. He is able to answer us when we ask if he needs the toilet, and even tells us that he needs it sometimes. We still get quite a few wet training pants during the day, a few wet nappies at night though he is generally dry, but we definitely catch more wee than we miss and some days he is completely dry.

Toby loves playing with the animal figurines, loves books though he still doesn’t have the attention span to sit through an entire picture book (generally), loves playing with the saucepans and kitchen utensils, and is desperate to ride the balance bike. He is an absolute delight to be around.

Daddy (holding toy cow out) asks Toby what it is. “Moo” is Toby’s response. Then Daddy holds out the horse. “Neigh neigh” says Toby. The toy tiger is next. “Roar” says Toby. Then Daddy holds the giraffe, and Toby says “long neck”.

Beanie

One of the biggest problems I have had this winter (so far) is working out how to keep the kids warm when we are outside on cold days. My mother offered to knit Nathan a jumper to help with my dilemma. I believe it is coming along well, and we are looking forward to seeing the finished product. It is at least 25 years since I have knitted anything, but that didn’t stop me deciding that I would knit Nathan a beanie.

I searched for a free pattern online with instructions simple enough for me to follow. I decided that Bev’s Basic Cozy Hat would do the job. I took the boys to Lincraft and Nathan chose some multicoloured wool. The only problem with the pattern was that no tension was specified, and we didn’t get the right ply yarn, so I figured I would just wing it and see how I go. I knitted the pattern for 3-9 year old kids, using the needles specified but I used two stands of yarn instead of one. The hat seemed to work out ok, and Andrew helped me brush up on how to make a pom pom (Google knows everything) and within a day of starting to knit the hat was finished.

The end result was a hat that doesn’t really fit Nathan, but it does fit Toby. We dropped into Lincraft again today to get more wool for Nathan’s hat……he wants the same colours, so his hat will match Toby’s. I did try to get him to change his mind, but I guess that he chose his favorite colours the first time and it does make sense that he still wants them.

My next problem….trying to work out how to get Toby to leave the hat on his head!

The Otways – Part 2

On day two of our trip we spent a couple of hours at Cape Otway lighthouse. The cost of entry for us was $35; the kids were free. There was quite a lot to look at, and we really enjoyed it. Of course, the best bit was the lighthouse…..and the devonshire tea from the tearooms.

When we were in the car leaving the lighthouse we noticed that there were many, many koalas in the trees near the road and one even crossed the road just in front of us. I don’t think I have seen so many koalas in one place before.

Sleeping (or not) at night.

14 Jun

I came across this link today and found it hilarious! If we changed it slightly to a husband who wakes sometimes but goes straight back to sleep, a 3 year old who generally stays in bed all night though has been known to join us in our bed (to wriggle and warm up) during some of the colder nights lately, no cats and a toddler who feeds pretty much every hour from 1 am until 5 am….well, I can feel her pain. 😀

The Otways – Part 1

Andrew took a couple of days off at the end of May and we had a four day weekend in Western Victoria. We celebrated my cousin’s 40th birthday in Timboon, but we took the coast road and enjoyed a slow trip to our destination.

Our first stop was in the rain at Erskine Falls. We walked a short distance to the lookout and the kids had fun stomping in all the puddles. The next stop was at Wye River which had a nice beach and we went for a pleasant walk. We stayed the night at Apollo Bay. There was a great playground just across the road from the motel, and we made good use of it.

A few random photos

10 Jun

Here is a little snapshot of a few things we have been doing lately.

Last Import-103
Toby modeling his new t-shirt while riding tiger. It is the most expensive fabric I have ever bought, but oh so cute!

Last Import-117
I try to do something special with Nathan when Toby has his day sleep. We generally have just over an hour together, just Nathan and me. We sometimes play Snap, Dominoes or UNO, do puzzles, cook something of Nathan’s choice (cooking is turning out to be a great way to learn fractions and larger numbers, those in the hundreds), read or do some craft. On one of those really cold days last week when the boys didn’t change out of their pajamas, we made a butterfly out of a toilet roll. Both boys thought it was great.

Last Import-119
Nathan modeling Daddy’s new gumboots.

And finally, two photos of the boys in the car during a recent trip to the country. One sleepy boy and one pulling faces for the camera.

Mixed up words

Last Import-122

I went in search of Nathan today when I realized I hadn’t heard him in a while…..silence usually means he is doing something he shouldn’t! I found him in the bedroom, bedside lamp turned on and sitting on the bed, and Arthur Bear on his back on the bed and under the lamp. Nathan was looking closely at him. I asked what he was doing. His response was “giving Arthur Bear affections”.

Funny how he tries to use words before he gets the general idea as to what they mean.
