Eastern Hill Fire Station

30 Mar

A couple of weeks ago Nathan had a day off school for a curriculum day and I took the kids to the Eastern Hill Fire Station. Every week on Friday at 10:30 am they have a display for kids, and it was a fabulous hour…highly recommended for anyone in Melbourne with small kids.

At the fire station the kids were given plastic firemen hats and we sat down on the ground to wait. The first thing the firemen did was put out two fires. On one they used a fire extinguisher and the other was put out with a fire blanket. They talked about house fires and what to do if you were in one. They got some kids up to practice ‘crawl down low and go go go’ and Nathan was a willing participant. Next they talked about if your clothes were on fire what to do. Another little saying was demonstrated and some other kids went up to practice ‘Stop Drop Cover Roll’. Toby wasn’t interested in volunteering.

Next they talked about the clothes that they wore, both the ones they wore around the station and those they wore to emergencies. We were told that once the bell in the station rang they had 90 seconds to get into their gear and to the truck. Then a few little volunteers got to race a fireman getting dressed. They beat the fireman who had a lot of interference while getting into his gear.

A heavy rescue truck from the Carlton fire station then arrived with lights and sirens going. The firemen in that truck got out the jaws of life (called spreaders and cutters) and opened and then cut off a car door that was ‘stuck’. After that truck left another fire truck arrived to put out a ‘fire’ and rescue someone from the top of a two-storey house. This job required a ladder to be taken out of the truck and put up against the house while other firemen got the hose and directed water onto the fire in a well-rehearsed and smooth operation.

When all the displays were over the kids got to turn on a fire hose and sit in the fire engine. Nathan and Toby had a fantastic time, and I got some reminders of things we needed to remember to talk to the kids about.

Tesselaar Tulip Festival

28 Sep

_MG_6483-3

The Tesselaar Tulip Festival is on at the moment and we went a couple of weekends ago. Some of the flowers were still in bud, but there were enough out to make a beautiful display. The kids had a ball running along the rows of flowers, though Toby wasn’t too impressed with the mud that ended up being caked on the soles of his shoes. We spent a very pleasant couple of hours admiring and photographing the flowers (and the kids). The theme for the weekend was Turkey, since that is where tulips originated, so there were stalls that were all things Turkish including food, so we had some kebabs for lunch. I guess they just couldn’t ignore the Dutch even though it was a Turkish theme, and we got some Dutch poffetjes as well.

We took a big detour to get home, going up to Mount Donna Buang again where it wasn’t as cold a last time! So no snow, but still quite cool. Nathan and I climbed the outlook tower while Andrew took a tired and cranky Toby into the shelter (Toby wanted to be carried up the tower but neither Andrew or I would agree to that :D) where the fire was going.

Open House

29 Jul

Yesterday we had a very interesting day in Melbourne. It is the open house weekend where some 90 buildings around Melbourne are open for tours and inspection. On the website is a Children’s Programme, and from that we chose three interesting places to have a look at.

We started with the Brain Centre at the University of Melbourne. We had a tour through the state-of-the-art research complex, starting with a short video presentation, then touring a couple of floors including some labs, and finishing with a demonstration of extracting DNA from strawberries and fluorescing bacteria (they fluoresce due to the insertion of a gene from a jellyfish into their DNA….the gene that makes the jellyfish fluoresce then also makes the bacteria fluoresce (got to love genetic engineering!)). Nathan was most impressed with a giant brain that is used for teaching purposes.

After a tasty lunch in Brunswick of Turkish food we drove to South Melbourne to visit the Australian Tapestry Workshop. We didn’t take the tour because Toby wasn’t cooperating, but we still wandered around and saw some beautiful tapestries hanging on the walls and one being made. We had seen a video of a tapestry being made at the museum recently, so it was wonderful to see it happening for real. There was also a kids activity which Nathan really enjoyed but Toby didn’t really get, where they wove their own small piece with the same woolen thread that is used in the tapestries. Nathan took some extra wool home to make another one.

From there we went to the mounted police which was also in South Melbourne. We had a tour of the stables and got to see a couple of horses being ridden around a ring practicing walking on strange objects like mattresses and walking through curtains. It was a very interesting talk, and Toby happily kept saying ‘clip clop’ and ‘neighhhhh’ while watching the horses. There were some people with video cameras videoing us at the start of our tour, and Andrew’s mum told us last night that she saw us on the channel 2 news!

So we had a fun day, with Nathan enjoying the DNA extraction at the Brain Centre and Toby enjoying the horses most.

Werribee zoo

02 May

Last weekend we went to Werribee zoo. Because we are zoo members, the kids recently got lanyards in the mail for their details (name, favourite animal and parent phone number). There were lots of kids wearing them!

We love the safari bus, and most of the photos below were taken from the bus, but before we got there we saw meerkats and the gorillas. One gorilla looked very comfortable lying on his back in the sun in a wooden shelter, but then he found somewhere else under a tree, taking his bedding with him.

Too hot to sleep

02 Jan

Yep, definitely too hot. The kids have both stayed up late the last couple of nights because they just wouldn’t go to sleep….and even then it was a battle to get them to sleep! It took us all night to get them to sleep and it was the same last night too. Anyway, it’s midnight now, kids are in bed, it is still 32 degrees in the house and not much cooler outside. Blah. But time for me to sleep now.

Healesville Sanctuary

19 Apr

_S3G3181-33

Last weekend we went to Healesville Sanctuary. The weather was lovely and sunny though it was chilly in the shade, the area of the sanctuary was beautiful and bushy, the animals were great and we had a really nice day.

We saw emus being fed, a flight show, lots of native animals and the super hero Crapman. Yes, the sanctuary was really pushing for people to use recycled toilet paper and had their own green masked super hero in a red cape with a picture of a toilet roll on it.

One of the highlights for the kids was a big inflated mat that they could jump around on and pretend to be kangaroos (it was near the kangaroo enclosure). Nathan bounced his way around the mat and Toby tried but often ended up lying on the mat and being bounced by all the other kids. He would then push himself off and start again.

The kids had fun and it was a lovely day out. We didn’t quite see everything because Nathan got a bit tired and cranky, so another trip is a must.

Grand Prix

03 Apr

_S3G0004-1

Last weekend was the Grand Prix in Melbourne. Andrew, being the car fan that he is, was keen to go. He was also keen to take Nathan for his first GP experience. I agreed that Nathan could go if, and only if, he kept ear plugs in his ears the entire time. We weren’t sure if a three-year-old would be able to do that, and apparently he did fiddle with them quite a bit, but he got a good two hours at the GP on the Friday morning. Andrew spent the rest of the weekend in a grandstand taking thousands of photos.

Now Nathan talks about race cars as well as steam trains and space travel all the time.

Puffing Billy

20 Mar

_MG_4279-18

We went took the kids in Puffing Billy today. We took the train from Belgrave Station to Lakeside where we had a picnic lunch and a walk around the lake before getting the train back to Belgrave.

Nathan had so much fun that he is currently obsessed with steam trains and reliving the train rides of today. In particular, he talks a lot about how the train stopped on the way up due to a lack if steam (a recent change of coal supply is causing a few issues for the trains). It took quite a long time to build up the stream and get the train going again. Toby just wanted to wriggle and explore, which made it very difficult when the train was crowded. An hour trying to contain a restless toddler is not a lot if fun, really.

We had perfect weather and the train went through some pretty parts of the Dandenongs.

Weather Station

21 Jan

IMG_1285

We recently set up a little weather station, with the data being uploaded in real time to a website (Andrew set it all up). I think we currently have the data being collected every minute, and we can get nice little graphs of the data. The most recent measurements are shown in the sidebar of my blog. We are measuring inside and outside temperatures, humidity, barometric pressure, wind speed, wind direction, wind gusts, and rainfall. It also calculates a wind chill factor when the temperature is less than 10 degrees. It’s great…though we have learned to position the Netbook it is attached to so that it doesnt blow hot air on the inside temperature sensor!

Collingwood Childrens Farm

19 Oct

Today I took Nathan and Toby to the Collingwood Children’s Farm. On the drive there I was talking to Nathan about what we might see there.

Mummy: we will probably see cows, and sheep…
Nathan: and dinosaurs!
Mummy: we probably won’t see dinosaurs
Nathan: but if we look hard we will see them! Hooray!

We met Janis and Annabella there and spent a relaxing couple of hours wandering around while the kids enjoyed the animals.

It was a coincidence that we happened to plan this outing on a day when entry was free. There were a lot of people and kids there, and parking was difficult to come by.

There were sheep and goats in small paddocks that were tame and could be touched. Nathan, along with many other children, was really interested in the kids (baby goats, that is) drinking milk from their mothers. Nathan loved the chickens..he always seems to be fascinated by chickens. We also saw horses and ponies, a couple of cows, a pig and held a guinea pig.

We had a lovely day, the weather was perfect, and it was hard to believe that we were essentially in the city with all the green open space around. I don’t think, though, that it is a place that we will frequent, but we will go back again….hopefully when it isn’t quite as busy as it was today.

Tonight I overheard Nathan telling Andrew about his day. I laughed when I heard “but we didn’t see any dinosaurs”.
