Scissor craziness

24 Mar

Last Import-1

This is the end result of a 3 year old and 1 year old enjoying themselves without Mummy’s supervision. The kids were having fun and I didn’t think much harm could happen in the bedroom. I finally decided to see what was keeping them so amused and happy (lots of giggling coming out of the room) and found Nathan cutting our relatively expensive queen size Sheridan sheet with his scissors that I had forgotten to put away after he was using them this morning. Apparently Toby found them on the little play table in the kitchen and took them into the bedroom. That’s Nathan’s story, anyway.

Toby is just getting better and better at things. His communication is getting better, with more recognizable sounds coming out of his mouth now. He tries to say phrases that we say a lot too, like “up in the air I fly” and “there you are”. He is also getting more and more definite about what he wants, and if he doesn’t get it then he certainly let’s us know about it! And he is getting better at running, though it is the typical ungainly looking toddler gait. He just wants to be able to keep up with his brother.

Toby has a real love of books, though he doesn’t often sit through an entire book before he goes off to find another one for us to read. And he is going really well with EC now. He seems to have got the hang of it and is now dry most of the time.

Puffing Billy

We went took the kids in Puffing Billy today. We took the train from Belgrave Station to Lakeside where we had a picnic lunch and a walk around the lake before getting the train back to Belgrave.

Nathan had so much fun that he is currently obsessed with steam trains and reliving the train rides of today. In particular, he talks a lot about how the train stopped on the way up due to a lack if steam (a recent change of coal supply is causing a few issues for the trains). It took quite a long time to build up the stream and get the train going again. Toby just wanted to wriggle and explore, which made it very difficult when the train was crowded. An hour trying to contain a restless toddler is not a lot if fun, really.

We had perfect weather and the train went through some pretty parts of the Dandenongs.

Just another fuzzy photo from Nathan the photographer, but I think it is cute.

Separation Anxiety

13 Mar

It is a fuzzy photo, but the expression is clear. Toby has not been very happy when away from me, ever since we left for Sydney some 10 days ago. I suspect that he missed his Daddy while we were away, and so he clung to me more than normal. If I left his sight, or walked away from him, or he was playing and realised suddenly that I was not near him, he would start crying inconsolably and looking for me. Even when I picked him up, the sobbing and crying would continue for quite a while. When getting Nathan to sleep I would try to leave Toby with my friends who we were staying with, but he was so upset at not being with me that I had to find other solutions to bedtime. Not even the iPhone or iPad would console him, and they are usually do the job beautifully when he is upset.

I thought that things would return to normal when we got back home, but it is taking a lot longer than I had imagined.

The three-year-old photographer

10 Mar

The kids and I have been in Sydney for a week visiting friends and doing some things we miss doing since our move to Melbourne. Yesterday we met up with some friends at Wildlife World. When we finished we were sitting outside when Nathan decided he had to take some photos and wouldn’t take ‘no’ for an answer. So, for the first time ever, he had complete control of the camera. His first photo looked like this:

Then he did a few portraits:

And he finished off with a group photo:

Not bad for a three-year-old beginner!

The Milky Way

02 Mar

Nathan wouldn’t go to sleep last night at his normal bedtime, so he was awake when we turned on the TV to watch a documentary about space on SBS last night. He went to sleep on the couch while watching the program.

Today Nathan said two words, just out of the blue. Milky Way. I asked him if he knew what it was, and he said he didn’t. The next thing I know he has taken his space book out of the bookcase and he is demanding that I read the bit about the Milky Way. I don’t think that either Andrew or I have read the book to him very much, so I asked him how he knew that it was about the Milky Way and he said it was because of the photo.

I guess it was just that he remembered it being read to him, but sometimes he just amazes me with what he remembers. And at other times I’m amazed by what he has forgotten.
