Toby’s 4th Birthday

21 Dec

Today my baby turned 4 years old. It was a hot day and we wanted to go for a swim later in the day, so we decided to start making the birthday cake when breakfast was finished. It was an easy job to mix the ingredients and put them into the cake pan, but for some reason I put the foil on top of the wire rack in the Weber instead of underneath it, and the bottom of the cake burned. So we cut the bottom of the cake off and iced the cake.

We had been told yesterday afternoon that the cake had to be a volcano cake. I was kind of hoping that the cake would rise in the centre when it cooked, but it was pretty flat when I took it out of the Weber. So we made a volcano-like mound in the middle of the cake with marshmellows and put brown icing all over it (because volcanos have to be brown). The cocoa to make the icing brown was provided by a fellow camper. Then I made some royal icing with icing sugar and egg white, and coloured it red, orange and green. The red and orange were to be the lava flowing down the side of the volcano, and the green to write Toby’s name on the cake.

Well, the final thing looked a bit of a mess, but the kids were ecstatic with the volcano cake. Because the day was so warm we decided to have the cake straight after lunch, and gave Toby his presents as well. Afterwards we went to the Thredbo pool and Nathan spent more than an hour going down the water slide while Toby spent nearly the same amount of time refusing to go down (after going twice with me at the start and he went under water so refused any more rides down the slide). Andrew finally talked Toby into going down with him and he held Toby out of the water at the end, and after that you couldn’t stop Toby….as long as he went down with Daddy.

Back at the tent site we had a fire to cook our dinner over, as requested by Toby, and marshmellows afterwards. Toby doesn’t like the marshmellows toasted, but he takes the opportunity of a fire to eat them uncooked.

Toby Turns 3

21 Dec

Toby’s birthday wasn’t a great one for the little boy. Both he and Nathan slept a really long time. In fact Nathan slept over 12 hours which is, for me, a reason to be concerned that he is getting sick. Nathan doesn’t generally sleep more than 10 hours, and if he sleeps more than 11 hours it is typically a sign that he is coming down with something.

When the boys were awake, Nathan stuck up all the decorations he had made and he put out the sign on the camper to tell everyone that it was Toby’s birthday. He was very excited to be putting them up, and Toby was pretty pleased with them as well. We had two lots of people visit to wish Toby a happy birthday, so Nathan was pleased that his sign worked, though in reality they were all people we’ve had a bit to do with and their visit was nothing to do with the sign.

We made pancakes for breakfast but Toby didn’t feel like eating them, and he had jelly for breakfast instead. We made the cake and put it in the Weber and then we opened a few presents. Pretty much as soon as that was done Toby wanted to go back to bed and that’s where he spent the rest of the day. He was so very miserable that we rang the medical centre at Jindabyne and were told that if we wanted Toby to see a doctor we had to be there before 4 pm.

So we packed up the campsite and headed into town. We had to wait a while to see the doctor, and when we got into his office Toby didn’t want to have anything to do with him. He tried to bribe Toby with stickers, but there were no train ones. Then he tried lollies, but the first one Toby got was a caramel one and he thought it was chocolate and didn’t want it, so the doctor went looking and found a green snake for him. Toby didn’t want to eat it, he just held onto it while the doctor listened to his chest and looked in his ears and mouth. He still had an elevated temperature, and after getting a quick glimpse of his mouth he decided Toby had an infected throat and prescribed some antibiotics. Before we left I asked the doctor just to take Nathan’s temperature as he seemed a bit hot to me and hadn’t been himself all day. The doctor said he was fine but humoured me, just to discover that indeed Nathan also had an elevated temperature and further discovered that Nathan also had red ears and a red throat. So Nathan was also prescribed antibiotics.

We went to the chemist to get the prescriptions filled, then down to the supermarket to get more jelly, back to the chemist to pick up the medicine and finally made it back to the campsite. Toby was looking a little better, so we quickly iced the cake, sang happy birthday and Toby opened his last present. He played for a bit with his new toys and then I tried to give Toby his medicine before dinner and Toby refused. The idea of having medicine, or my attempt at giving him some medicine, upset him so much that he went back to bed and went to sleep.

As far as I could tell from Toby’s cries all night his sleep was full of nightmares about Nathan doing things Toby didn’t want him to do, not getting his watermelon the way he wanted it, and me trying to give him medicine.

Nathan turns 3

11 Feb

It has been very exciting for a 2-year-old to be nearly 3. Nathan has been “nearly 3” for quite a while now. In December he was ‘3 next year’. In January he was ‘3 next month’, and once February hit it has practically been a count-down to today. Funnily enough he seems to think that he isn’t 3 today until after we have cake.

Several months ago we bought a crane that we planned to give Nathan one day. We were thinking that it could wait until he turned 4 years old, but we decided recently that he was probably old enough for it now. I just hope he is old enough now to be careful not to damage it. He loves the crane….but so does Toby!

He got a bit of other birthday loot too. I will post photos later when we have faster internet than we have at our campsite at Wilsons Prom.

Happy birthday Nathan.

Happy Birthday Nathan!!

It is so hard to believe that a year has passed since Nathan entered our lives…sometimes it feels like it was just last week, and other times it seems like there was never a time without him.  He has turned into a little person, walking everywhere now (he doesn’t crawl anymore), saying a few simple things, communicates well using actions and pointing, can play by himself for a while, loves books though won’t always sit still for the entire book, and screaming/crying when he’s unhappy (often this is when I’ve taken the car key away from him!).  Andrew and I think he’s just perfect, and he brings us so much happiness.

Andrew thinks I’m mean, but I booked Nathan in for his 12 month jabs today.  He didn’t even flinch for the first jab, cried for the second one and was screaming by the time the third one was finished.  Poor little mite.  He was soothed by a bit of a breastfeed, but was still unhappy when we put him in the car, so I took him to the park for the rest of the morning.  He was weighed and measured as well, and apparently he’s a shortie!  He came in at 10 kg on the scales, and 70 cm tall.

Our new sleeping arrangements are that the hammock has been moved out of our bedroom and the cot has been moved in.  I don’t know if it’s the new arrangements or if he was just not quite 100% for a while recently, but suddenly Nathan has been sleeping better at night.  He wakes less often (he slept 9.5 hours without waking on Monday night!) and is easy to get to sleep when he does wake.  So far so good.

Oops, almost forgot to mention that Nathan’s 8th tooth has come through.

To finish off, here’s a trip down memory lane.
