I’m running late for Toby’s 3 month update!  I say it every week, but I don’t know where the time goes, the days just flit past so quickly.

Toby is now rolling from his back to his tummy, though when he gets onto his tummy he squirms and complains and tries to crawl.  His legs are strong, but his arms don’t work!   When I put him on the change table lying down, if I give him my hands to hold then he will try to pull himself up to sitting.  I can pull him up and if his feet are well placed, Toby will then push himself up to standing.

EC is going reasonably well, though some days we don’t catch anything and at best we’re only doing it part time.  What does impress me, though, is that most nights Toby is dry when he wakes up after 11 hours of sleep and I can usually catch his first wee of the day.

A few days ago, when Toby was sitting in the bouncer and I was busy doing something, I heard him  suddenly squawk loudly.  I looked around and Nathan had taken Toby out of the bouncer and was holding him by the head/neck and Toby was essentially standing.  Nathan is just so desperate to pick up Toby and hold him and care for him.

Our ‘routine’ at the moment is that Toby wakes up around 7 am, he sits in his bouncer chatting to us while I run around getting breakfast for Nathan and getting ready to go out.  Toby sleeps in the Mai Tai while we’re out, then we come home to get Nathan to sleep around midday.  Nathan goes to sleep and Toby wakes up (though he’s generally been awake for a while before that). Sometimes, though, Toby has a nap while Nathan is sleeping.   In the afternoon Toby generally just gets a few catnaps unless we go for a walk somewhere and then he’ll get a decent sleep in the mai tai.  Back home for dinner, and then Toby is asleep for the night around 8 pm.

Overalls

18 Mar

I’ve dabbled at sewing off and on over the years.  I used to make some of my own clothes, but I never learned to adjust patterns to fit (I guess I never had the perfectly proportioned body) and sort of gave up.  I never enjoyed the sewing, but always loved the finished product (if it fit properly).

When I was pregnant with Nathan it had been a very long time since I had last sewn anything, but still I decided to sew a heap of fitted cloth nappies.  Once again I liked the finished product, but found the process tedious (admittedly I made a heap of them).  So it took me a bit by surprise that I really enjoyed making the mei tai recently.

Every now and again I had contemplated sewing Nathan some clothes, but I had a lot of trouble finding patterns for boys….except pajamas!  In contrast, there are a million gorgeous patterns available for girls.  It doesn’t end there either….it is also not easy to find fabric for boys either!

The Danish magazine, Ottobre Design, is produced 4 times a year and has loads of patterns for kids from babies to about 160 cm tall.  I have contemplated buying one just to see what they are like, and finally I took the plunge last month.  Nathan wanted everything in the magazine, but we finally settled on trying to sew a pair of overalls. We went to the fabric shop just down the road andNathan chose some fabrics for the overalls.

Then I had to cut out the pattern pieces.  It didn’t take long to get the hang of tracing the patterns off sheets of paper that are absolutely covered in lines and curves of differing colours (to differentiate between different garments).  Then I pinned the pattern pieces onto the fabric and then had towork out how to cut them out and add a seam allowance at the same time.  Finally I was ready to sew.

I carefully followed the instructions, had to unpick a couple of bits that didn’t seem to be described adequately, and had to wing it right at the very end when I just didn’t understand what was meant.  I had jean studs added by a man at a local buttonhole business and although I had bought a button and buckle set for the shoulder straps I decided that the clips from braces (suspenders) that were supposed to be used would look neater.  So then I set out on a mission to find somewhere to buy 2 clips that took a strap width of 35 mm.  It turned out to be impossible.  After trawling the internet, a visit to both Lincraft and Spotlight, and two St.  Vinnies shops (for second hand braces) I determined that braces with a width of 35 mm were readily available, but the clips can only be bought for 20 or 25 mm wide straps.

Mum came to the rescue when she found a $4 pair of braces at a local St. Vinnies shop and sent them to me.  They arrived today, so I finally got to finish the overalls that Nathan has been wanting to wear for the last two weeks. I’m so very happy with how they turned out, that I’m excitedly planning more projects from Ottobre.  I think Nathan just loves having 6 pockets to play with, and clips to undo.

So here is the finished product…

I’ve mentioned before that Nathan absolutely adores Toby, even if he does also persecute him at times.  Right from day one, though, Nathan has wanted to cuddle Toby and pick him up and care for him.  It wasn’t long before he wanted to change Toby’s nappies as well.  These days Nathan thinks he is capable of any part of caring for Toby, from breastfeeding him to bouncing him to sleep in the hammock.

Arthur Bear has become Nathan’s baby substitute for some major role-play that is happening here recently.  Apparently Arthur has heaps of wet and pooey nappies which need to be changed on the change table.  This results in nappies being strewn from one end of the flat to another, as nappies are removed (and thrown onto the floor or put into the wash) almost as soon as they go onto the bear.  Arthur also spends time in the bouncer, but he cries a lot so Nathan has to take him to the couch to breastfeed him.  When Arthur is tired he is put into the hammock and bounced off to sleep, and if Nathan decides that we’re going somewhere in the car, then Arthur is put into the car capsule, and I even whipped up a mock mai tai for him to carry Arthur in.  I don’t think that any baby has ever had a more attentive parent.  That is, of course, until Nathan gets sidetracked by something interesting and dumps Arthur like a hot potato, only to run around frantically looking for him later.

On occasions, as well, Angus Bear (Toby’s bear which is just a different colour to Arthur but otherwise the same) is also cared for, and that means that Nathan has to feed them both at the same time!  Both bears also use the toilet or potty on occasions, even though they are nappy-wearing  bears.  He also cues them like we cue Toby to wee.

We tried Toby in the Bumbo a few days ago, but he’s still too floppy to properly sit in it.  Still, he was there long enough to get the obligatory photo.  😀

Toby continues to become more and more interactive with us.  He smiles and talks to us any time we talk to him, and last night Andrew got a short giggle out of him.  It was so cute to hear.

Toby is now spending more of the day awake and has shorter sleeps.  Some sleeps are shorter than they should be because Nathan has started yelling every time I tell him (or he notices) Toby is asleep, just to wake Toby up.  Big brother persecution has definitely begun.

Toby is a smiling, interactive boy who tries to talk.  Last night he spent ages smiling at Nathan, it was very cute.  He responds to us by smiling or ‘talking’.

He doesn’t seem to be quite so noisy  at night now, probably because he seems to be sleeping better after that first wake-up of the night.  Consequently, I have had a couple of nights where I spent the entire night in bed!  I won’t be sad to say good-bye to sleeping on the couch in the sitting position with baby beside me andsupported by a tri-pillow (that’s my breastfeeding position using football hold that I often use on the couch).

While he is sleeping better at night, Toby isn’t sleeping as much during the day.  He spends a small amont of time happily playing on the floor or watching the goings on from the bouncer, so I do get a break from carrying him around now.  I still love the Mai Tai and use it in preference to the other carriers when out, but I use my pouch to quickly comfort Toby when we’re at home.  I do also wrap him on my back for short periods most afternoons, and even had him wrapped on my back in the pool last week so that I could easily play with Nathan in a pool that was waist deep.
