Me: Toby, what would you like to be when you grow up?
Toby: a vet!
Me: that would be great, but it is also what Nathan wants to be. Would you like to be something different?
Toby, after thinking a moment: an Octonaut!

Grown up jobs?
Brotherly friends….or not
Nathan (to me): do you know who my best friend is?
Me: hmmm….Toby?
Nathan: yes!
Toby: do you know who my best friend is?
Me: hmmmm….Nathan?
Toby: no, it’s Fred the millipede (the kids named a millipede and a cockroach a few days ago).
Me: oh, really? Don’t you mean Nathan?
Toby (decisively): no, it’s Fred!
So, apparently Toby likes a bug that he probably tried to squash by standing on it more than he likes his brother! Lol.
Who carries the tent?
Nathan and Andrew were talking on the phone. Andrew asked if Nathan had enjoyed riding his bike to kinder this morning. When he had an answer in the affirmative, Andrew asked if Nathan would enjoy a holiday where we rode bikes instead of driving in the car. Nathan looked pretty confused by that concept, so I piped up with “oh, bicycle touring, Mummy has done that” and Andrew said “yes, you carry everything you need on the bike, like your tent…”. Nathan looked absolutely horrified and declared “I’m not carrying a tent!”
Ear plugs
Nathan came to me yesterday all excited about ear plugs. “I have ear plugs” he excitedly told me. I glanced in his direction and saw a kind of grey material in his ears. A couple of days ago he found some small, squishy, bright green ear plugs, but it certainly wasn’t those he had in his ears. On closer inspection I found he had squashed a hamburger patty (cooked and left over from last night’s dinner) into his ear. He and Toby had taken the leftovers out of the fridge, and both were trying to squash meat into their ears. What are those two going to get up to next?
New call sign
Andrew has his Ham radio going in the car. His call sign is VK3BQ, though he usually calls it VK3 Bravo Quebec. When we were in Sydney it was VK2 Xray Echo. Nathan, sitting in the back of the car, just told us that he has a new call sign. He is VK2 Xray Stop!
Penguin hair
Today I woke up with a penguin tangled in my hair.
I wonder whether that has any meanings that can be read into it….other than the fact that Toby took a penguin figurine to bed last night and i happened to put my head on it during the night. I did vaguely wonder what was sharp and sticking into my head….seems it was just a penguin beak.
Endangered
We have been watching on iView the BBC series Last Chance to See. Nathan is really enjoying it. We watched some this afternoon, and afterwards I came across Nathan and Toby sitting side by side in the hallway.
Nathan: Mummy, we are on a boat.
Me: Really? Where are you going?
Nathan: We are on the edge of extinction.
Words
Mummy to Toby: do you want to do a somersault?
Nathan: is it summer?
Mummy: no, it is winter.
Nathan: I want to do a winter-sault.
Daddy, reading book to Nathan and Toby: …..four cuttlefish……
Nathan gives Toby a hug and says: cuddlefish!
We had fajitas for dinner tonight. I said something about the fajitas…..
Nathan, pointing to the heating vent: there’s one there!
Mummy: what is there?
Nathan: a heater!
Sleeping (or not) at night.
I came across this link today and found it hilarious! If we changed it slightly to a husband who wakes sometimes but goes straight back to sleep, a 3 year old who generally stays in bed all night though has been known to join us in our bed (to wriggle and warm up) during some of the colder nights lately, no cats and a toddler who feeds pretty much every hour from 1 am until 5 am….well, I can feel her pain. 😀
