03 Sep

We had a relaxing morning at our campsite. Breakfast was cooked on the campfire, and Nathan updated his diary and blog. The kids rode around, played in the dirt and had a hit on the pole tennis. We drove into town after lunch, did a load of washing, grabbed a few things at the supermarket, got some ice and then went to Steamtown where we bought the tour and the lights show.

The tour was great. They had a roundhouse with different engines and carriages that we could look through. The guide told us lots of interesting history about the trains and the general workings of a train town. There were steam engines, Diesel engines, passenger carriages from various times, a maternal and child health carriage, carriages with beds (one had the kids’ bed virtually in the ceiling of the train which the kids thought would have been a great place to sleep) and a very fancy, spacious carriage complete with piano! After the tour we wandered around an area which you could explore without a guide. Nathan was pretty impressed with a train carriage that had a zigzag hallway with tiny compartments for one person.

After Steamtown we took the kids to a playground and had a counter meal at one of the pubs before heading back to Steamtown for the lights show. It was essentially a movie about the history of trains in the district, and how they related to other South Australian and Australian railways. The whole rail gauge issue, in hindsight, seemed like such a waste of time and effort, having to move people, stock and goods between trains where the rail gauge changed. Nathan found it really interesting, Toby didn’t want to but he fell asleep. I thought it was really well done.

While we were having the tour of Steamtown Andrew fell down some steps and hurt himself. We are hoping that there is no serious damage, but his arm/elbow is pretty sore at the moment. Our good camera, though, is now out of action, as it hit the steps quite hard when Andrew fell.

Morgan to Peterborough

02 Sep

We thought about spending two nights at our campsite in the Morgan Conservation Reserve, but in the end we decided to push on. Our destination is the Flinders Ranges, but it really was a lovely spot we had.

We drove to Burra and went to the town and copper mine lookouts, had some lunch and kept going to Peterborough. This town has a steam place that Toby has been looking forward to, and the tourist information centre was in an old train carriage. That was pretty exciting for the kids, but it got even better when Andrew pointed them in the direction of an old steam engine they could play in.

We decided to stay a couple of nights at a property about 15 km out of Peterborough called Willangi. We paid at the tourist information centre, though the lady who served us didn’t seem to know a great deal about it and actually asked why we wanted to go there (according to her there was nothing there and lots of creepy crawlies). As far as we were concerned, the local caravan park wasn’t our style and there seemed to be no decent free camping places nearby.

So we followed our map out to the property and followed the signs on the property to the shed campsite, which is the one we were told to use as the others weren’t currently in use. We met Neil at the shed and he moved the mob of sheep that were in the paddock somewhere else, but even so we were disappointed that there was little shade and loads of fresh sheep poo around. Still, we’d paid so we started setting up the camper when a lady drove up to tell us that she had just received her message that we had come for two nights and they usually put campers for multiple nights in a different camp. It had more shade, no sheep poo and a dry creek bed for the kids to play in. We decided to pack the camper back up and move, and it certainly was a much nicer site. They supplied some wood so that we could have a fire, which we made use of and cooked our dinner on it and also had the obligatory marshmellows afterwards. We looked at the stars and listened to the wind in the trees, Andrew took some photos of the stars, and we went to bed. Ahhhh, the peace and quiet of no mobile coverage.

Birds identified: mallee ringneck, sulphur-crested cockatoo

Nathan, who was so very excited about it being Father’s Day, told Andrew (in fact they were the first words Nathan spoke when he woke up) that he could choose whether he drove or not today because it was Father’s Day. Andrew prefers driving, so I couldn’t see it being any different to any other day in that respect. We had breakfast and packed up the trailer, making sure there was enough time to open the Father’s Day presents. Nathan had bought a couple of items at the Father’s Day stall at school which he had put a lot of thought into.

On the way out of the National Park we saw a beautiful Mallee Ringneck and also a few sulphur-crested cockatoos. When we got to Red Cliffs we had a wander around the monthly market and had a sausage each from a sausage sizzle and bought some more bread, milk, frozen vegetables and a few items of fruit. We knew we couldn’t take fruit and vegetables into South Australia, so we didn’t bring much of either. However, it occurred to us today that we could take frozen veggies and since our car-fridge is currently in freezer-mode we bought some frozen veggies to eat until we could find some fresh veggies in SA to purchase. It worked out that we needn’t have worried as there were plenty of opportunities to purchase fresh fruit and veggies across the border.

We crossed the border into South Australia and about 5 km further on was the quarantine station. Toby scoffed a banana during those 5 km. We stopped in Renmark to eat lunch and the kids enjoyed a splash in a fountain. Nathan said the water was cold, but it was lovely on a 31 degree day!

After lunch we drove on to Morgan and found a lovely spot to camp in the Morgan Conservation Reserve. We had thought that we could have a swim in the River Murray, but it was pretty cold and only Andrew was brave enough to completely submerge. And at night we were serenaded by frogs…it sounded like there was a lot of them.

Today we started our trip to the Flinders Ranges and had a long day of driving. We left home before 9:30 am and stopped at Wedderburn for lunch. Soon after we stopped at the steam train in Wycheproof. Toby had just fallen asleep in the car but he woke up pretty quickly when we told him that we were at the train. The kids spent half an hour running around and exploring the train and the turntable before we had to get back into the car.

It was late in the afternoon when we reached our campsite. We quickly put up the camper and had a wander to the lake before getting dinner ready. Nathan wrote in his diary and then copied what he wrote onto his Nathan’s blog. It was the first blog entry he had ever written by himself.

We are staying here one night, so tomorrow we will pack up early and keep moving west.

Camping near Elmore

09 Jun

We decided to go camping for the weekend at a free campground called Aysons Reserve Camping Area on the bank of the Campaspe River. The weather forecast was for fine weather and it isn’t very far from Echuca where there is a Steam Rally on this weekend which we thought the kids would enjoy.

The campsite is relatively busy, particularly compared to last time we visited when there were very few campers. But there is a big area and it doesn’t feel too crowded. We first pulled up at the same spot where we camped last time, but a ranger came to talk to us and we were told that you have to camp further than 20 metres from the river (and if we were camped there when he got back we would receive a fine). There are no signs up, however, advising of this rule.

There has been quite a bit of work done to the camping area since our last visit. There is a long row of bollards along the edge of the road stopping people from camping too close to the river (they didn’t go as far as we were going to camp), the toilets have been upgraded (byo toilet paper) and there is a dump site for black water.

We set up the tent and Nathan started his regular trek around the neighbouring campers to chat to them, and he discovered that we were camped next to some people who had taken their 5-year-old granddaughter, Isobelle, camping for the weekend. Isabelle was taking a couple of small dogs for a walk and Nathan rode his bike beside her and chatted, and by the end of the day they were practically inseparable.

It was quite a chilly night, getting down to around 2 degrees overnight. Nathan sat on his bike for ages this morning waiting for Isabelle to come out of the caravan and ended up deciding to write her a note…there is a photo of it below. Originally he was going to sign it ‘Love from Nathan’ but in the end he left it unsigned.

Australia Day long weekend

27 Jan

We decided to go camping for the long weekend and on Friday at about 3:30 pm we left home and headed towards the Otways. We were about 3 hours later than we had hoped to leave, and we just hoped we would find a campsite somewhere. We knew it would be busy on the coast, eing a long weekend and the last weekend of the school holidays, but we were a little unprepared to see caravan parks on the way full to bursting! Luckily we managed to find somewhere to set up the camper at Aire River, and even though the campsite had seemed full when we got there, many, many more caravans and camper trailers arrived to squash in with their friends who were already camped there. It was a very busy and very noisy campsite.

Saturday morning Andrew took the kids for a walk and after a while Nathan came running back really excited that we could go canoeing. He was literally jumping up and down while he told me all about the canoes we could hire. So it was into the bathers and over the bridge to the canoe hire trailer for some life jackets and a canoe. We hired it for an hour and the boys had a great time.

After lunch we went for a drive to see if we could find a beach to have a swim at. First we went along a sandy track across the bridge just to see where it went. It was good to have a go at letting down the tyres for sand driving and then pump them back up again with our air compressor. Then we headed to Johanna Beach which was really, really rough. Nathan was disappointed that he wasn’t going to be able to have a go with his boogie board. The campground at Johanna Beach was as crowded as the one we were camped in at Aire River.

It was a very noisy night. Some people had a fire going just behind our camper trailer and they had a big night with loud music and drinking.

Sunday we went to visit my aunt and uncle at Timboon. We got there in time for lunch and we were certainly well fed. After lunch Leonie took us to see the horses and both kids fed them some apple and she got Nathan up on the back of one of the horses. He was a bit unsure about it but I think he enjoyed being up there. Ray took each of the kids in turn on a quick quad bike ride just before we left which they loved. Toby fell asleep on the way back to Aire River. I put him in the tent when we got back and he slept for 12.5 hours!

Monday we packed up the camper. It was pretty wet but the sun was hot and the camper dried quite quickly. Toby fell asleep in the car soon after we left Aire River and so we drove until we got to Aireys Inlet where we had some lunch. We were heading for a beach at Point Roadnight which was just before we got to Anglesea. One of the other campers told me about it this morning and it sounded perfect for the boys. In fact, it was perfect. It was shallow and sheltered and the small waves were perfect for Nathan to try out his boogie board on. Toby even had a go in the water with his pool noodle but he preferred to play in the sand.

Besides the crowded, noisy campground full of people drinking, smoking and swearing, we had a lovely weekend. And I’m keen to go back to the beach at Point Roadnight again, that was a great find. 🙂

Lazy Day and Back to Melbourne

24 Dec

Yesterday was another lazy day with a very cranky Toby. It was a very warm day too, but all Toby wanted to do was sleep on the bed which was quite a hot place to be. Andrew set up the fan to help move some air around which helped. Nathan also had a sleep in the afternoon which is very unlike him.

Both Andrew and I had had enough of Toby being clingy and cranky, and just wanting Mummy to sleep with him all day, and only having very short happy periods throughout the day. It was very windy this morning and the forecast was for showers and cold days for the next couple of days, so we made the decision to go home a couple of days early. We are onto day 6 of sick Toby and it hasn’t really been a lot of fun. Now that he has a rash all over his body I’ve finally diagnosed him as having roseola which is caused by a herpes virus (of course I could be wrong, but it looks the same as when Nathan had it when he was little).

We packed up the trailer, said goodbye to the two couples we have got to know, had a last visit to the river and started driving back to Melbourne via the Barry Way and Cann River. We have never been back this way and it is really very pretty.

We made a couple of stops on the way back for the kids to stretch their legs at playgrounds at Bombala and Cann River, we had a short walk on the beach at Marlo along the mouth of the Snowy River before it started to rain, and we had fish and chips for dinner (Toby’s choice) at Bairnsdale. The rest of the trip home was uneventful and we got home around 9 pm.

Charlotte Pass

22 Dec

We went to Charlotte Pass today after popping into Jindabyne to get a bit more drinking water and get rid of our rubbish. Toby was really tired and still not well, so we also thought it would give him a chance to sleep in the car.

We only did the very short walk to the lookout at Charlotte Pass. Nathan remembered walking down to the Snowy River last year and we promised to do some more walks with him in this area in a couple of years.

Every time we have been to the mountains since Nathan was born, there has been a photograph taken of Andrew with the kid/s, so (of course) we had to do it again this time. Unfortunately Toby was particularly upset and didn’t want to pose for a photo, but it will forever more remind us of the holiday in the mountains when Toby was sick.

Toby slept on the way back to the campsite, and after he woke we had a play in the Thredbo River at the campsite. It really is a lovely place.

Toby Turns 3

21 Dec

Toby’s birthday wasn’t a great one for the little boy. Both he and Nathan slept a really long time. In fact Nathan slept over 12 hours which is, for me, a reason to be concerned that he is getting sick. Nathan doesn’t generally sleep more than 10 hours, and if he sleeps more than 11 hours it is typically a sign that he is coming down with something.

When the boys were awake, Nathan stuck up all the decorations he had made and he put out the sign on the camper to tell everyone that it was Toby’s birthday. He was very excited to be putting them up, and Toby was pretty pleased with them as well. We had two lots of people visit to wish Toby a happy birthday, so Nathan was pleased that his sign worked, though in reality they were all people we’ve had a bit to do with and their visit was nothing to do with the sign.

We made pancakes for breakfast but Toby didn’t feel like eating them, and he had jelly for breakfast instead. We made the cake and put it in the Weber and then we opened a few presents. Pretty much as soon as that was done Toby wanted to go back to bed and that’s where he spent the rest of the day. He was so very miserable that we rang the medical centre at Jindabyne and were told that if we wanted Toby to see a doctor we had to be there before 4 pm.

So we packed up the campsite and headed into town. We had to wait a while to see the doctor, and when we got into his office Toby didn’t want to have anything to do with him. He tried to bribe Toby with stickers, but there were no train ones. Then he tried lollies, but the first one Toby got was a caramel one and he thought it was chocolate and didn’t want it, so the doctor went looking and found a green snake for him. Toby didn’t want to eat it, he just held onto it while the doctor listened to his chest and looked in his ears and mouth. He still had an elevated temperature, and after getting a quick glimpse of his mouth he decided Toby had an infected throat and prescribed some antibiotics. Before we left I asked the doctor just to take Nathan’s temperature as he seemed a bit hot to me and hadn’t been himself all day. The doctor said he was fine but humoured me, just to discover that indeed Nathan also had an elevated temperature and further discovered that Nathan also had red ears and a red throat. So Nathan was also prescribed antibiotics.

We went to the chemist to get the prescriptions filled, then down to the supermarket to get more jelly, back to the chemist to pick up the medicine and finally made it back to the campsite. Toby was looking a little better, so we quickly iced the cake, sang happy birthday and Toby opened his last present. He played for a bit with his new toys and then I tried to give Toby his medicine before dinner and Toby refused. The idea of having medicine, or my attempt at giving him some medicine, upset him so much that he went back to bed and went to sleep.

As far as I could tell from Toby’s cries all night his sleep was full of nightmares about Nathan doing things Toby didn’t want him to do, not getting his watermelon the way he wanted it, and me trying to give him medicine.

Washing Day

20 Dec

This morning was cold and really windy again, and it also rained heavily for a while before the clouds disappeared and the sun came out. We didn’t do much today, just went to Jindabyne to do some washing (at the backpackers) and stock up on some fruit and veggies at the supermarket.

Toby was still sick today and very clingy. All he wanted to do today was lie in bed and snuggle with Mummy or Daddy, but mostly Mummy. So it was a very lazy afternoon, dozing with a hot Toby who only ate watermelon and unset jelly all afternoon. Nathan and i did go down to the river and we walked across and back twice which he enjoyed. Nathan is also very excited about Toby’s birthday tomorrow and has been drawing decorations and even made a sign to go on the tent. It says “this is Toby’s birthday, come in to celebrate”. The wording was Nathan’s, he just asked for help spelling the words. He also drew a lot of 3-year-old Tobys.

Nathan has also made a new friend at the campsite. As usual he has been visiting many of the other campers, but there is a boy who would be 1or 2 years older than Nathan who has been riding around on his bike. This afternoon the two of them spent ages riding up and down the road, having races.
