13 Months Old

Nathan is just a wonderful little kid nowdays.  In some ways he has become so much easier than he was….he is sleeping better, generally wakes up happy and smiley, and smiles and even laughs fairly easily now.  He tries to be helpful by helping me carry the laundry basket full of washed clothes to the clothes line, put pegs in the peg basket, helps carry bags when we are out, likes to try to help me cook, tries to vacuum and has an interest in absolutely everything.

Nathan is still a very good eater, but nowdays he is trying to learn how to use the fork.  We have put thick plastic on the table now to try to protect it, since it was getting dented by the tines of the fork as they hit the table with some force!  He isn’t very good at picking food up with it yet, but as with everything else he manages with some effort, when he does pick up some food he lets out a little noise showing his delight that he achieved it.  It is so very cute.

Other things that Nathan is getting better at is riding his tiger (though his feet only barely touch both sides of the floor at once now), shape puzzles (he recognises the circle and finds it easy to put into puzzles, but other shapes are still a bit difficult)….

and just generally going through Mummy’s handbag.

In fact, he loves looking in my purse, getting the coins out and then running to his bedroom to put the coins into his moneybox.  Andrew gives Nathan his silver coins every Friday night to put into his moneybox, but he’s doing a very good business by stealing other coins from my purse during the rest of the week!  I stopped putting coins into my purse and just threw them into my bag, but Nathan is also very good at finding them there too!

It is interesting that Nathan still adores the car key (far far FAR better than any other key) and we have overcome the screaming that used to erupt every time we tried to take the key away from him.  Now when we are going somewhere in the car, I tell him and he immediately rushes over to stand near the bowl we keep the keys in, reaching up towards the bowl (that he can’t reach yet).  I give him the key and he rushes off to the front door, key tightly held in his hand.  I open the door and he walks out to the lift, we get into the lift, out at the carpark level and he walks around to the car, constantly pressing the buttons on the key.  I do confiscate the key when he gets into a button-pushing frenzy, but usually he’s ok.  So he unlocks the car, and then goes to stand at the driver’s door.  I let him in and he tries to put the key into the ignition (I help) and then he stands on the seat and plays with the steering wheel and anything else that takes his fancy.  Then he goes into the car seat without too much of a fuss.  When we get home he wants the car key as soon as I turn the car off, then he holds it all the way back to the flat and goes to the bowl and waits for me to lower it for him to put the car key into.  He isn’t always happy to give it up, but since it’s where it belongs we don’t get much noise about it at all, in contrast to the days when I used to just take it (after telling him why) and he would just scream!  So I think that if Nathan feels that he’s being useful and putting things where they belong, he’s happy!

    As mentioned here: http://2009-project365.blogspot.com/2009/03/66365.html

I always feel like a bit of a bad mummy when I read your blog and what Nathan is up to. It’s hard to watch the 1st born vs 2nd born senario unfold before your eyes.

Felix had my undivided (mostly!) attention for two years and loves reading, helping and puzzles. I’m sure caspar will find his groove too, but what they say rings pretty true, the subsequent kids just have to fit in to a degree. This probably sounds harsher than my reality, but it’s something along those lines!

That reminds me, I must give caspar a fork and see what he can do with it!

Nathan is looking so grown up! You have a real lil helper on your hands!!

    K 🙂
